The Best Shoe For Your Workout

This question comes up numerous times when working with clients, so we thought we’d take a minute and answer if here.

First, there is a difference between a cross training shoe, running shoe, walking shoe, and casual shoe. The cross-training shoe is what we recommend because they will provide more lateral stability around the foot and have a flatter heel to toe drop than the other times. While a running and walking shoe will work, they typically, lack the lateral stability and have thicker sole, and a higher heel to toe drop.

So why is this important?

By having more lateral stability on the foot it will keep the foot from sliding off to the side when performing lateral movements such as lateral lunges, jumps, and change of direction movements. But will help even when squatting if you use a wider stance by not letting your foot slide off to the side in the shoe.

A flatter heel to drop will result in less pressure on the knees and back when lifting, because when the heel in raised more it tends to place more pressure on these areas. Also, from a strength standpoint the flatter the shoe is the less sole there is to compress when performing lowering body exercises so you can get a firmer push off leading to the ability to handle slightly more weight.

Here are a few of the top rate fitness shoes currently on the marketing. But really any cross-training shoe will work for most people if it fits comfortably.
