The ability to hinge the hips and pick an object up from the floor might be one of the most important movements our bodies are able to perform. One of the best ways to work on this movement is through the Deadlift because it is very similar to how we pick things up from the floor, or at least how we should pick things ups.
Additionally, the Deadlift gives us strong glutes (aka your butt muscles) which are important for the following reasons:
- To lift things from the floor without injuring our backs.
- Glutes are considered the muscles of youth. If they are strong your body tends to perform and move like a younger person.
- The glutes are involved in balance, which can help prevent falls as we age.
- They add power to a golf swing or tennis serve.
- They act as the foundation for the spine. If we have a solid foundation, we have a healthier back. Many times, because the glutes are weak, the hamstrings must take over to provide this foundation and this downward pulling on the hamstrings can cause and agitate low back pain.
- And strong glutes make your butt look good in jeans.
Here are a few tips on how to do it…
1. Start with the barbell over the mid-foot.
2. Take a deep breath to brace and lock the core.
3. Grab the bar, sit back into your glutes, take the slack out of the bar.
4. Pull the shoulder blades down and together – pretend there is an orange in each armpit and you are squeezing the juice out.
5. Push away from the floor as you stand.
