Getting Older Doesn’t Have To Suck

By: Josh Proch, CSCS, Pn1

Let’s face it is, as you get older your body changes. Maybe you can’t run as fast as you used to, maybe you have more aches and pains, or it might just be that you can’t seem to get a full night of sleep anymore. These changes are all part of getting older, but that doesn’t mean we should just except that and not work at being the fittest and healthiest version of ourselves at each stage of life.

Getting older does not mean that you cannot ski, hike, workout, and be intimate with your partner well into your golden years. You can, and you should be. And the right fitness plan will help you do so.

But, for many people they just aren’t doing the right type of exercise. They may walk, do pilates or yoga, cycle, or swim. While those are all great activities and are definitely better than doing noting, they just don’t compare to the benefits of strength training.

As we get older we lose muscle the fastest, which causes us to lose strength and mobility. And strength is directly related to overall health and longevity. In fact, a recent study found that men who could do 40+ push-ups at any stage of life had something like a 96% less chance of having a cardiac event in the following year. Even more interesting is when they looked at the men who could not do 40+ push-ups and had a cardiac event many of them were able to pass a cardiovascular stress test.

This doesn’t mean that we should not ever do cardio, but strength training should be the backbone of our exercise.

Maintaining strength and mobility is the secret to aging well. It allows use to move well and do the activities we enjoy and have the best experiences of life.  We are all getting older each day, after all it’s the only option we have. But, staying fit and strong with age is a choice.
